Can You Sell a Car Not Registered in Your Name in the Philippines?
You’re ready to sell. There’s just one catch: someone else’s name is on the Certificate of Registration (CR).
That doesn’t automatically stop a sale. You’ll need documents showing that you bought the car or have authority to sell for its owner. Start with the situation that fits you.
You bought the car. The CR has another name.
Think of the paperwork as the car’s ownership trail. If Ana sold to Ben, then Ben sold to you, bring both deeds. Each sale needs to connect, with matching names and vehicle details.

Your starting checklist: the original Official Receipt (OR) and CR, the Deed of Absolute Sale signed by the registered owner, and copies of that owner’s valid government-issued ID. A blank or open deed won’t fill a gap in that trail.
One extra check with Mobee: if you’re the second owner, the car is under five years old and stated as not encumbered, also prepare the previous owner’s sale documents and proof of payment. Our Booking Team will confirm any further checks.
You’re helping the owner sell
“Can you sell my car for me?” If a parent or friend asks, first agree who will sign. Being family, or holding the keys and OR/CR, doesn’t automatically authorize you to sign for the owner.

Have a lawyer or notary check the specific authority to sell, such as a Special Power of Attorney (SPA). It should identify the car and say which actions are allowed, including signing, receiving payment and releasing the car. Under the Civil Code, general management authority may not cover a sale.
Before spending on notarization or sending originals, confirm the documents with the buyer, lender if financed, and LTO office handling the transfer.
A few situations need an extra check
Owner overseas: check signing and authentication requirements with the Philippine embassy or consulate serving their location. Depending on the country, consular notarization or local notarization followed by an apostille may apply.
Company car: prepare the company registration documents, proof of the authorized signatory and OR/CR. Mobee will confirm the full checklist after review.
Owner has passed away: ask an estate lawyer who can sell and which estate documents are needed before anyone signs.
Before you hand over the keys
Sort out missing deeds and mismatched names or vehicle details first. Agree who signs, who gets paid and who handles the LTO transfer, its costs and proof of completion. Keep copies of the completed sale and handover records.
